Army of Women - Breast Cancer Awareness Month Initiative

On the Today show a week ago, they featured a story on Dr. Susan Love and the national initiative called the Army of Women, that (partnering with Avon) she set up through her foundation to “recruit one million women of every age, ethnicity, and breast cancer history interested in partnering with scientists and taking part in breast cancer research that will move us beyond a cure.”

Her goal is to recruit 1 million women from around the country, with and without history of breast cancer, to participate in various forms of research (as simple as filling out a questionnaire, all the way to blood, urine, or tissue samples- you decide what study you volunteer for); and challenge the scientific community to focus larger research efforts on finding the root cause and potential prevention of breast cancer. Most research to date has been limited to women who have already been diagnosed, therefore making it hard to identify the pre-diagnosis factors.

Having family members and friends that have been touched by this disease, I have signed up as a volunteer for this initiative. In passing along this information I hope to encourage others to support it by volunteering themselves, forwarding the information to other women, or just by being educated and aware of the valuable research that will be taking place. The number of volunteers that have signed up as of today is over 140,000 – how awesome!

This is a ground-breaking initiative and Dr. Love seems to be a pioneer and visionary in the field of breast cancer research. You can find more information and even volunteer by going to http://www.armyofwomen.org.
